Taylor Fladgate Very Old Single Harvest Port 1968

Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalTaylor has extensive reserves of very old, cask-aged tawny ports. Beginning with the 1964 vintage, since 2014, they have been releasing single vintage Colheitas, marking the wine's 50th anniversary in barrel ever since. Time mellows all wines, and in the case of tawnies, it tends to intensify its internal structure. It opens with a deep, light-brown colour that bleeds to the edge. The nose is a nutty, walnut, resiny affair with hits of melted caramel and marzipan. On the palate, it is viscous and sweet with more nutty butterscotch flecked with spice and mellow oxidative vanilla and Christmas cake notes. A wine for contemplation and sheer enjoyment of drinking 50 years of cellar work. In an otherwise unremarkable year for European wine, this is one to celebrate with especially if you have a connection to 1968.Tasted: 26 November 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
