Phantom Creek Estates Phantom Creek Vineyard Cuvée Cuvée N° 22 2017

Osoyoos, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaAfter a slow start, 2017 took off in the summer, making up the two week delay and easily maturing the fruit to full phenolic ripeness. Pioneering viticulturist Richard Cleave planted the site, now known as Phantom Creek Vineyard, in 1996 on the Black Sage Bench's lower terrace. The 38/35/13/10/3/1/ mix of cabernet sauvignon/petit verdot/malbec/cabernet franc/syrah/merlot sits just above the warm valley floor on a small seven acre parcel. It is 100 percent barrel fermented, helping meld the oak and fruit early. In all, it spends 20 months in French oak, 77 percent new. The wine is intense with strong black fruit, black olive, and savoury notes that run throughout the wine. The textures and tannins are highly refined, offering a chalky, mineral streak to a wine that won't be ready to drink for a decade. There is a lot of oak here in a fairly traditional, youthful, New World red blend. Less is more might be useful here, but with so few iterations of this wine, each year is a discovery. Time to wait.Tasted: 23 October 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
