Phantom Creek Estates Kobau Vineyard Merlot 2017

Osoyoos, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada2017 got off to a slow start, but a hot, dry summer set the tone for the rest of the year, allowing for full phenolic ripeness. The southerly aspect of the Kobau vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench allows the vines to bask in the early morning sun and escape baking in the late afternoon. Yields were down with smaller bunches, but that only increased the intensity of the fruit. The nose is a mix of cedar, graphite, and black fruit that spills onto a powerful midpalate and a rich, spicy finish. Rich, full, and youthful, this needs time to calm down and shed some oak. At 75 percent, the new oak dominating its Okanagan ethos at this point suggests five to seven years of cellaring before coming back to this wine.Tasted: 23 October 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
