J. L. Chave Sélection Mon Coeur Côtes-du-Rhône 2018

Côtes du Rhône, Rhone Valley, FranceFor the Domaine Chave experience, at an approachable price, look to JL Chave Selections, a négoc operation sourcing fruit from across the Rhone. Jean-Louis makes these wines to showcase what he believes to be the potential of appellations with which he works. Mon Coeur is a blend of four distinct terroir located in and around Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and approximatly equal parts Syrah and Grenache, from vines between 20-60 years. This youthful wine opens with a puff of reduction, so best to give it a little bit of airtime before tucking in. Immediately syrah's meaty, peppery, savoury notes rule, infiltrating dusky cassis, black olives, potent violets. Grenache pads out the sides, with its ripe, leathery sun-baked strawberry and cherry. Tannins are somewhat raggedy, though appropriate, and the finish is warming (also appropriate for 15%), all of which make this prime for drinking alongside grilled lamb and/or winter root veg now.
