Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz 2017

South Australia, AustraliaAlways one of the more inviting Penfolds reds, St Henri comes by its nature via older wood. In 2017 the 97/3 shiraz/cabernet sauvignon was harvested across Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, and Port Lincoln before spending a year in 2000 litre vats now over fifty years old. Unlike the warm 2018 growing season, 2017 was comparatively cool and long, playing into St Henri's strength of projecting a savoury, fruity style. The high acidity adds energy to the persistent, spicy red fruitcake, pomegranate, and dried beef notes, supplemented by a garrigue-like finish. Supple and polished, it is approachable now yet has all the hallmarks that will let it age effortlessly for a decade and beyond. Not your typical Australian shiraz, which is the story of St. Henri. A very fine effort and one of the best I have tasted. As drinkable as it is now, this will age into two decades with ease.Tasted: 29 September 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
