CedarCreek Platinum Block 5 Chardonnay 2018

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFrom the top of their Home Block vineyard, this was transitioned to organic viticulture in 2017. According to winemaker Taylor Whelan, the change in the vineyard was dramatic, with smaller canopies, and phenolic ripeness at lower alcohol and higher acidities; all good results. After a native ferment, partially in foudre and rest in barrel, and with partial MLF, this remained in wood for one year prior to a 6 month tightening stint in stainless prior to bottling. This vintage is positively boned with potent flint, structuring the medium body through the lemon curd, lemon zest, fragrant white blossom, savoury hay that flushes out the frame. All is bedded on a broken stone base that lingers along with the flintiness long after the last sip is gone. It's a style that reminds me very much of New Zealand's expert handing of the flinty, powerful, reductive chardy style, and is quite well balanced even at a relatively youthful age.Tasted: 20 August 2020Tasted by: Prices:
