Laughing Stock Vineyards Amphora VR +23/10 2019

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis year's Amphora dropped the M or marsanne grape leaving a VR (Viognier / Roussanne) blend. Winery ownership has changed, and the Enns family is now entirely out of the building as is winemaker Nikki Callaway as the brand falls into the control of the Arterra group. That said, the ripe, lush style has remained consistent. It is the 7th year for this experimental wine, natively fermented in 500L amphorae, with no inputs or deletions other than a small amount of sulphur, before bottling without fining or filtration and the obscure naturalist wine might be the best in the portfolio (no pun intended). Pouring a hazy golden hue, it is bone dry and teeming with honeysuckle, pointed apricot, tangerine, anise, all gripped around the sides with a fuzzy orange riff from the skins. The end lingers with salinity and crystalline apricot. Edgy and exciting, without any apparent bitterness, it is imminently drinkable at 14 degrees — it is is a gem.Tasted: 23 July 2020Tasted by: Treve Ring & Anthony GismondiPrices:
