Keremeos, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFrom Whispered Secret Vineyard in Keremeos, this pinot gris was fermented in a combination of stainless steel and French oak puncheons before aging on its lees for three months. It’s a restrained, lightly aromatic style that balances bright citrus and tree fruits alongside a subtle touch of wood. There’s a lovely richness and concentration to the palate, with a viscosity that’s gently bolstered by the pinch of residual sugar (3.8 g/L). It still retains a tension and precision that is difficult to achieve with pinot gris, which is what sets this apart. It’s tempting to think of pinot gris as a ‘drink now’ variety, but this wine should convince you otherwise. It really opens up nicely in the glass: a good indication that the best is yet to come. Keremeos, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaLast year was the first time out for this label from Keremeos-based Whispered Secret Vineyard, and 2019 is equally as exciting. It is electrified with bright, fresh acidity and a whack of mineral, stony nuances that let it hum along the palate. The winemaking is gloriously simple; whole cluster pressed fruit begins the process. It is fermented it in a combination of stainless steel barrels, tanks, and French oak puncheons, slow and cool over a month. It spends another three months on lees before light filtration and bottling. I love just sipping this wine in the sunshine, but it will pair endlessly with the likes of summer salads, chicken, pork, sushi rolls, fish tacos, and much more.
