Bodegas R. Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia 2017 Viña Bosconia Reserva 2007

Rioja Alta, Rioja, SpainOver 130 years of winemaking tradition have gone into the wines of Rioja’s Vina Tondonia, one of the legendary old school producers still vital and vibrant today. Old vines, local grapes, estate fruit and lengthy cellaring are their hallmarks. This blend of older vine tempranillo, garnacha, graciano, and mazuelo is sourced from El Bosque vineyard, at 465m on clay and limestone soils, next to the river Ebro. This aged 5 years in large oak before bottling. Leathery tannins house savoury dried dark cherry, dried florals, roasted root vegetables and pumpkin, old paper, scents of cloves, studded with mineral salts and echoing with wild scrubby, anise and thorns. Tannins are still strident, though worn with age, and although oxidative notes are infiltrating, this still has a treble of acidity drawing it to a lingering finish. Drink now, with grilled lamb, or a wild mushroom risotto.Tasted: 17 May 2020Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
