M. Chapoutier Domaine de Bila-Haut L'esquerda 2017

Côtes du Roussillon Villages, Roussillon, Sud de France, FranceL’esquerda is mostly syrah, followed by grenache, and then carignan. The attack is a stony mineral power affair with much freshness and healthy black fruit and violet aromas dusted in baking spices. On the palate black cherry, meaty, spicy, flavour set the tone with plenty of youthful tannins and a strong undercurrent of garrigue and licorice. Spaghetti Bolognese or osso buco are excellent matches at this point. A giant of wine for terroir seekers and the patient. The vineyard of Lesquerde sits on granitic hilltop plains and slopes some 350 metres above sea level. The grapes are destemmed, and total maceration lasts around four weeks. Only 10 percent of the wine is aged in oak casks, the remainder in concrete tanks.Tasted: 18 March 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
