Wachau, Niederösterreich, Weinland Österreich, AustriaSmaragd is the ripest expression of gruner veltliner in the Wachau, and this shows exotic yellow and tropical fruits with white pepper and a volcanic smokiness. There is an oily richness to the palate, while retaining good tension and freshness. The complexity and concentration is well above the norm, and there’s a lot of wine here for the price. I’m not sure if it has the intensity of fruit to seriously benefit from more time in bottle, but it’d be interesting to follow its evolution.Tasted: 11 January 2020Tasted by: Geoffrey Moss MWPrices:
