Castello di Gabbiano Alleanza 2010

Tuscany, ItalyThe 2010 Alleanza is a blend of 60 percent merlot and 40 percent cabernet sauvignon, aged in a combination of new and 1-year old French barriques. According to the winery, it is in “perfect balance between the old and new world style.” Yes, there’s a notch more weight and ripeness here than you’d typically expect from Tuscany, but the thing about Bordeaux blends in Italy is that they are always characteristically Italian in style. This sounds like an obvious thing to say, but I don’t know if it’s as true for any other wine region. In this case, the tannins are still assertive, the fruit is still red-fruited, and there’s no shortage of savoury notes with sandalwood and leather. This is drinking well now, but there’s no shortage of fruit concentration and structure to support further aging. Fine value.Tasted: 01 January 2020Tasted by: Geoffrey Moss MWPrices:
