Masi Osar Oseleta 2011

Verona, Veneto, ItalyOsar is a wine of vibrancy and complexity that takes appasimento, the drying of the grapes before fermentation, to a whole new quality level. It is made with an ancient Veronese grape variety, oseleta, that the Masi family rediscovered and replanted in the 1980s. It has that particular electricity and structure that snaps you to attention. Fresh and vibrant, dense and round, it covers the palate effortlessly with refined red and blue fruit and sleek, dusty tannins that sing throughout its long, fresh, finish. The Italian words osare and rischiare mean 'to dare or risk', reflect many of the challenges undertaken by the Masi family in using this grape, one that had been abandoned for decades. Osar also means 'cry out with joy' in Veronese dialect, something I’m sure the Masi family did when they finally came to know this ancient grape.
