Le Serre Nuove Dell' Ornellaia 20 2017

Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy2017 will go down in history as being one of the hottest, driest years ever in Bolgheri. The fruit is a 54/26/14/6 mix of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot from younger vines and blocks that don’t make it into Ornellaia. It’s a high bar, but what’s left is pretty impressive juice because nothing much is left to chance at Ornellaia. This is classic scrubby, savoury, Bolgheri with red and black fruit flecked with balsamic. The tannins are sleek, allowing you to enjoy the wine now, but I suggest a minimum of five years of ageing before you get into it. I love this with wild boar pappardelle, but most meat dishes work just as well. Le Serre Nuove undergoes malolactic fermentation that begins in stainless steel and completes upon transfer to mostly French barriques, 25 percent new and 75 percent second fill. It’s aged 15 months in oak but is assembled after one year and then returned to barrels for a further three months. After bottling, it was aged for six months at the winery.Tasted: 24 November 2019Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
