Mayer Bloody Hill Pinot Noir 2018

Yarra Valley, Victoria, AustraliaUnlike most of Timo Mayer's wines, this doesn't employ whole bunch fermentation. After destemming this organic pinot, grown between 300-470m on Bloody Hill's rocky volcanic soils, this fermented over three weeks on skins and was aged in French oak barriques, 30% new, for three months. Timo's slogan is 'bring back the funk', and this certainly has it, with earthy moss, sour cherries and a small wave of reduction upon first opening. The core is soft, downy, and red-fruited, and thankfully a tight rivulet of buzzy acidity carries this to the saline finish. There is an evident light touch under all the funk. This benefits from a chill and needs to open up in a decanter or over an evening.Tasted: 27 August 2019Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
