Campo de Borja, Aragon, SpainTres Picos is the top cuvée at Borsão. The fruit grows on volcanic soils and the vines, heat-loving, head-pruned garnacha, average 30-65 years of age. The attack is rich and heady with soaring red cherry and raspberry-scented fruit with a dusty, resiny medicine cabinet edge. It’s old school, but its complex, mineral, chalky notes will surprise. Spain means oak again, and in this case, it is about ten months in older oak. Tres Picos is the top cuvée of Borsão, drawn from 30 to 65-year-old, head-pruned garnacha from the slopes of the extinct Moncayo volcano. Thick on the palate, with potent wood courtesy of 10 months in older French oak barrels, and stainless steel. This holds its sun-drenched alcohol (15 degrees) very well.
