Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2013

Franschhoek Valley, Paarl, Coastal Region, South AfricaSemillon is one of those wines that chameleon in the bottle with age, moving from primary green and yellow fruits, into earthy, honeyed, wax territory. This Franschhoek sem is well on its way, entering the tertiary stage with ample mushroom, worked leather and dried fruits ruling the medium+ palate. From 1936 planted bush vines, and with a splash of coplanted sémillon gris, this was whole bunch pressed, with native fermentation starting in stainless before finishing in barrel, where it rests for MLF and ferment. There's an amazing 90% new wood here, which the winery affirms isn't felt due to the cold ferment, and I have to concur, especially at this secondary cusping tertiary stage. Ample white honey, mushroom, savoury meringue, subtle dried quince, pear skin and earl grey tea roll the long, medium-bodied, stony palate to a salted pine nut finish. As this opens and warms in the glass, it grows and grows. If you're going to open now, allow for that, otherwise tuck this into your cellar for another few years.Tasted: 22 July 2019Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
