Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County, Central Coast, California, United StatesMossfire Ranch in Paso Robles is home to this merlot, planted in 1996 on steep hillsides and a rolling valley. Paso is a sun bowl, but the ocean can be an effective deterrent to too much heat via wide daily diurnal shifts of up to 40◦ F. The result is intense black fruit but not overcooked, with pleasant, dusty/chalky tannins and an attractive dry finish. Ten months in 15 percent new French oak polishes up the finish.
