José de Sousa Mayor Red Wine 2015

Alentejo, Central and Southern Portugal, PortugalThe José de Sousa Rosado Fernandes Cellar was founded in 1878, and purchased by José Maria da Fonseca in 1986. The estate is in Alentejano where the 2000-year-old Roman tradition of using ceramic amphorae to ferment wine is alive and well. The grapes are hand harvested, slightly foot crushed and destemmed by hand. A portion of ferment is done in clay with part of the must, skins and 30 percent stems at a temperature of 28C. The rest is fermented in concrete lagares. Post ferment, the wine is left on skins for two weeks followed by eleven months in new French oak. The blend is a 58/30/12 grand noir / trincadeira / aragonés. The nose has an earthy, almost oxidative bent with cedar, spicy black fruit. The texture and tannins are extremely soft with a jammy, leathery chocolate aftertaste. This wine is poised to age effortlessly and will likely change little in the bottle over the next decade. Try this with risotto and mushrooms, duck confit or grilled lamb.Tasted: 16 October 2018Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
