Ortas La Domeliére Rasteau 2016

Rasteau, Côtes du Rhône Villages, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceLovely expressive nose with violets, brambly fruit and brandied cherries. There's also a distinct and appropriate damp saddle whiff, plus lavender, rosemary and a little smoked oak showing too. In the mouth, I like the conjunction of sweet and ripe fruit with briary, woodsy, savoury flair. The fruit is assertive with red plums and more of the brandied cherries, this time with a spicy heat to them - not a surprise, given the high proportion of Grenache. Syrah does its job, imbuing the wine with dark fruit, pepper spice, mid-weight chewy tannins, and a pleasantly bitter bite on the finish that links well with food. Rusticity, well expressed. Juicy, fresh, and full of character.Tasted: 22 August 2019Tasted by: Prices:
