Coenobium Ruscum 2016

ItalyI've long been a fan of Coenobium, the wine made by nuns. In particular, they are the Roman Catholic Sisters of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, under the guidance of Giampiero Bea (yes, the son of one of Italy's most prominent non-interventionist wine producers, Paulo Bea). So I was thrilled to come across this new-to-me wine from the Sisters, Ruscum. This is the same blend of trebbiano, malvasia, verdicchio and grechetto grown on volcanic soils, fermented wild on skins for a lengthy period, with nothing added / taken away. The difference is Ruscum has 2+ more weeks of skin contact, giving even more depth and texture and grip to this orange wine. Elderflower, orange blossoms, grilled almond, rambutan, Asian pear, on a grippy, fine, palate, threaded with pomelo oil. A wash of salts throughout, finishing with a pinch of spice. So easy, so natural (no pun intended), so singular. I love this characterful wine.Tasted: 12 March 2018Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
