Kendall-Jackson Cabernet Sauvignon Vintner's Reserve 2014

Sonoma County, California, United StatesSommeliers should drink a little less Alsace and a little more KJ occasionally and a lot of wine lists would improve. I’ll admit Vintner’s Reserve is hardly a home run name but the 2014 VR is the Aaron Judge of affordable cabernet sauvignon. The label is over 30 years old and it is only getting better because of KJ’s impeccable fruit sources. The blend is 2014 is 99 percent Sonoma County, one percent Mendocino County and the fruit mix is cabernet sauvignon (90 percent) blended with merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot. It’s all aged 10 months in 55/35/10 French and American oak barrels and stainless steel. The 2014 vintage was a cracker and the wine simply sings at three years old. Look for ripe black cherry, blackberry; a seamless mix of black fruit and cassis with a dollop of vanilla and mocha but all with some finesse. Ready to drink and perfectly suited to red meats. Great value in California cabernet. Back up the truck.Tasted: 31 July 2017Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
