Champagne, FranceBlack Label is a fabulous introduction to champagne, from its 50/35/15 combination of pinot noir, chardonnay, and pinot meunier, selected from more than 100 villages. Its 30 percent reserve wines span ten vintages back to 1995. A small percentage goes through malolactic fermentation before it is all aged for three years on lees before disgorgement in 2020, and another six month rest before shipping. I love the mix of power and elegance here. Toasted almonds, citrus, creamy, chalky mineral notes spill across the palate and pull you into the wine with a special force. In fact, the Black Label is a stunning introduction to Champagne from its 50/35 15 combination of pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier, selected from numerous crus and blended with 30 percent reserve wines spanning up to ten different vintages. Even better, it spends a full 36-month on its lees with an additional six months following disgorging before it is shipped. Expect the unexpected: power and elegance with a stream of freshness from front to back. Toasty, citrus, honeydew notes with a creamy, mineral, chalky, long finish awash in salinity. There is no malolactic fermentation employed at Lanson, giving it a brightness of acidity that allows it to cellar forever. Perfect for tuna sashimi or at dinner with scallops in lemon cream sauce or roasted pheasant. In fact, it is known to be a favourite of Queen Elizabeth and it’s the house bubble at Wimbledon – so it’s certainly good enough for you to enjoy - especially considering its reasonable price (sigh - on our market). A stream of lemon, from first whiff to the crisp finish, with light stone, green apple and an underlay of light white florals. 50/35/15 pinot noir/chardonnay/pinot meunier blend in the cuvée. For the moment the Black Label Brut remains a solid player in the very mixed category of non-vintage brut selections. The nose is fresh and floral with classic toasted brioche notes, the palate crisp and juicy with mostly stony, green apple fruit, some lemon, hazelnuts and pear with just hint of sweetness in the finish.
