Fonseca Vintage Port 2011

Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalThe winter and early spring were kind to the 2011 vintage, dropping some 500 millimetres of much needed rain on Pinhão in the heart of the Cima Corgo area through April. The weather turned dry but the rain did its job, allowing for perfect bunch development. A bit more precipitation in late August would help to finish off the growing season with highly coveted, even ripening across the region. The picking order began at Quinta do Panascal in the Távora Valley, followed by Quinta do Cruzeiro in the Pinhão Valley and finally at Quinta do Santo António, also in the Pinhão Valley. Early on the wines were aromatic and powerful and little has changed in the glass since then. The colour is almost black, the nose youthful with rich, floral aromatic notes, ripe black fruits, liquorice, perfumed violets, black tea and exotic five spice scents. The attack is rich and plump with fabulous black fruits, soya, raisins, licorice, mint and plums that sit on a stony mineral undercurrent. Really an opulent (Fonseca) style that is going to need decades to settle in. For these who love the hedonistic youthfulness of port it is amazingly approachable now but this wine will live for decades.Tasted: 23 March 2018Tasted by: Prices:
